Under the impact of multiple factors such as economicslowdown, regional conflict, climate change and extreme weather, the world has entered a compound risk era with multiple crises. Combined with the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the agricultural and food systems havebecome fragile. Therefore, howthe agricultural andfood systemscan betransformed to be more resilientwithin this grim contexthas alreadyshapedup as a central issue in China andelsewherein the world.

Building a healthy and sustainable food system is an importantassurancefor achieving a sustainable food future. Several issues related to the three pillars of sustainability include economicgrowth, society and the environment should be considered. The GDP, farmers’ income and other economic criteria currently play the main drivers for decisions in agriculture and associated food systems, integrating social and environmental objectives, such as safe and healthy foods, climate, carbon-neutral, as priorities is key. Furthermore, the whole food value chainapproachis required to examinethe drivers of food systems.

Agribusinessis regarded as a sector that supports the growth of the agricultural industry. Itis not only pivotal toeconomic growth, but also contributes to the healthy and sustainable food system, as well as improvement of income for a majority of the poor indevelopingcountries. Meanwhile, agribusiness increases the emission ofgreenhouse gasesand contributes to global warming. For this reason, policies designed to promote agribusiness and sustainable food value chains play a crucial role in achieving a healthy and sustainable food system. It is clear that all participants in the sector must find new ways to address such problems.

The issue will be discussed at the 2021 CAER-IFPRI Forumto be held at the International Conference Center (ICC) of China Agricultural University in Beijing on Oct.30, 2021. Under the theme, linked withFood System and Agribusiness development,five distinguished scholars and experts in the field from China, America, Canada and Australia, will highlight opportunities for the sector and the healthy and sustainable food system, enhance the market participation of food value chain actors including supply and demand as well as the institutions and markets in which these are embedded and exploreinnovative solutions to advance the development of agribusiness.
